Common sense
I do believe consumers say something like that. I just don't believe the majority actually wants that. That's not what my experience tells me, and certainly not my common sense. If I order something online today, I need it sometime that week. If I need it tomorrow? Then I won't take the risk and I'll just go to the store. Then I have control and I influence the timing myself. It might cost me a bit more time, but it's worth it to me. Because tomorrow is already quite fast.
Not sooner and not later
Here's my take on it: Consumers say they want their package delivered tomorrow. Not because they need it tomorrow, but because they then know for sure that the shipment is on its way as quickly as possible. The smaller the chance that something will go wrong. I'm almost certain that consumers don't necessarily want their shipment today or tomorrow. I know they want to maintain control over the delivery. Just like me. They want their package when they need it. Not sooner and certainly not later.
Driving around for nothing
What if we offer consumers control? Letting them decide when their package is delivered. So that the supplier isn't driving around for nothing all day. Wouldn't that help the entire industry move forward? I think it's about no longer carrying shipments that we can't deliver anyway. Then we wouldn't have to load them, set them aside, accidentally damage them, or unload them back at the distribution center after a useless trip.
No harm in asking
Wouldn't it be much simpler if we knew which shipments we could deliver and which we couldn't? And we can certainly know that, because the recipient already knows. We just need to ask them to tell us. Are you in?
