AI is everywhere, and its impact on the logistics sector is growing. But how do you smartly deploy AI for more efficient delivery processes and real-time decision-making? Melle Sprenger, CTO and co-founder of RoutiGo, closely follows AI developments and investigates how the technology can play a role in delivery logistics in the future.
During the Logistics & Delivery Lunch Event on April 10, 2025, Melle will share his vision on AI in logistics. In this interview, he offers a sneak peek, discussing the opportunities, challenges, and what companies can truly expect from AI.
AI as a tool, not an end goal
AI is often seen as the ultimate solution for more efficient logistics processes. But according to Melle, AI is not an end in itself, but a tool to make complex processes smarter. Therefore, companies must first determine which challenge they want to solve before deploying AI as a solution.
"AI won't automatically look for ways to work more efficiently," he explains. "It's a powerful tool, but only if you clearly define what you want to achieve with it beforehand. Without a clear problem, AI remains a tool without direction."
At RoutiGo, AI is not simply applied, but carefully investigated for its added value. Significant opportunities lie particularly in route planning and customer communication. AI can not only help to better substantiate planning decisions but also to make customer interactions more efficient. This leads to faster decision-making and better service, without unnecessary employee intervention.
AI as support for planning decisions
One of the biggest challenges in delivery logistics is the acceptance of plans. Even if a route plan is perfect, it is often adjusted in practice. This doesn't always happen because the original plan is wrong, but because planners don't always understand the decisions.
"A good algorithm can create an efficient route, but if the planner doesn't understand why that route was designed that way, doubt can arise. That leads to unnecessary adjustments and inefficiencies," says Melle.
AI can help by making planning decisions more transparent. For example, by showing which factors played a role in determining a route and what benefits a particular plan offers. This gives planners more confidence in the system and reduces time wasted on adjustments.
Additionally, Melle sees an important role for AI in customer communication. RoutiGo is investigating how AI can be used to automate helpdesk inquiries, so customers are helped more quickly and efficiently.
"Think of AI-powered assistants that can instantly tell customers where their order is and when it will be delivered, without needing an employee," he explains. "This saves time and improves the customer experience."
The future of AI in delivery logistics
According to Melle, it remains difficult to predict where AI will develop in the next five years.
"Developments are happening so fast that the AI we use today is the least advanced version we will ever have. Five years ago, no one thought AI would be this far along by now. So it's hard to say what's yet to come, but companies that are now exploring AI will gain a head start as the technology matures further."
