The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) recently received many reports about webshops that, among other things, delivered late and were difficult for customers to reach. All the more reason for the ACM to keep a close eye on webshops in the run-up to the holidays – the period when traditionally more is purchased.
Consumer Protection
ACM director Edwin van Houten states that consumers must be able to rely on the information a webshop provides about the product, price, delivery time, and right of return. They must also be able to trust that webshops adhere to the rules, as these rules are intended to protect the consumer. If companies fail to do so despite warnings, the ACM will take strict action. For example, a webshop for fashion items was issued a conditional penalty order at the end of October.
Right to Fair Information
According to an ACM spokesperson, it is especially important to communicate honestly and clearly about deliveries. "I fully understand that you want to say something can be delivered within 24 hours, but if that's not possible, then don't say it," the spokesperson stated.
